In a candid interview, 31-year-old Selena Gomez opened up about her decision to take a break from social media, attributing it to her heartbreak following the end of her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber, who is now 29.
“I had just gotten my heart broken,” Selena shared in a recent conversation with Fast Company, which was published on October 3. “I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing,” she added, reflecting on her emotional state at the time. She also acknowledged the negative impact of social media on her self-esteem, admitting, “Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram. Wow, I wish my body looked like that.”
Selena and Justin’s on-and-off relationship finally came to an end in 2018. Coinciding with the breakup, Selena received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, making it a challenging period in her life. However, in her 2022 Apple+ documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” she surprised fans by labeling the split as “the best thing that ever happened to me.”
“Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore,” she revealed in the documentary. “I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of a hand, it was really confusing. But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
While Selena rarely delves into her complex relationship with Justin, she did touch on their breakup in her 2019 track, “Lose You To Love Me.” The song contained poignant lyrics such as “In two months you replaced us” and “I needed to lose you to love me.” Although Selena never explicitly confirmed it was about Justin, she emphasized in a 2020 interview with NPR that it’s “not a hateful song.”
“It’s a song saying I had something beautiful and I would never deny that it wasn’t that. It was very difficult, and I’m happy it’s over,” she stated at the time. “I felt like this was a great way to just say, you know, it’s done, and I understand that, and I respect that.”
Following her split from Justin, Selena had a 10-month relationship with The Weeknd in 2017. While there were brief rumors about her involvement with Drew Taggart of The Chainsmokers earlier this year, it was evidently not a serious romance. Since then, Selena has playfully teased her single status on social media and even released a new song, “Single Soon,” dispelling speculation that it’s about her relationship with The Weeknd.
